All Souls College Library, formerly known as Codrington Library, is an academic library in Oxford, England. It is the library of All Souls College, the graduate college of Oxford University.

The Codrington Library in Oxford, England is a place of attraction for scholars from all over the world. It contains nearly 200,000 books on jurisprudence, history, military affairs, sociology and religious studies. At the same time, about a third of this collection was created in the 19th century and earlier. Built in the middle of the 18th century with donations from Oxford University councilor Christopher Codrington, the library has only been restored once – in the late 1990s.

The library in its present form was provided by Christopher Codrington (1668-1710), a member of the college who made his fortune from his sugar plantation in the West Indies, which was worked on by enslaved people of African descent. Codrington bequeathed books worth £6,000 in addition to £10,000 in currency (the equivalent of about £1.2 million in modern terms). The library, designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor and begun in 1716, was completed in 1751 and has been in continuous use by scholars ever since. It is a Grade I listed National Heritage of England.

The current collection has about 185,000 items, about a third of which were created before 1800. The library’s collection especially includes items on law, European history, church history, military history, and classical literature.

A collection devoted to sociological topics and the history of science is expanding. Unlike the Oxford College Library, access to Codrington is open to all University members (subject to registration). The library contains a significant collection of manuscripts and early printed books and attracts scholars from around the world.

The first woman to be admitted to the library as a reader was Cornelia Sorabji of Somerville College at the invitation of Sir William Anson in 1890.

In November 2020, the college decided to stop calling the library the Codrington Library as part of a set of steps to address the problematic nature of Codrington’s heritage, which comes from the wealth derived from slave plantations.

The Library accepts applications for admission (on the recommendation of a mentor or supervisor) from law and history students, as well as graduate students at the University of Oxford. Junior members of other departments may also apply for admission. The library issues its own library card; the Bodleian card alone is insufficient to secure admission to the library.
